The story of the Nowak family, living amidst the urban rubble of Buffalo, NY’s East Side. Maybe the neighborhood is depressed, but not Clara, the family matriarch. She happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the family heirloom – a twenty-foot shrine to the Blessed Mother which adjoins the house. This neighborhood beacon of faith commemorates the day in 1942 when the Blessed Virgin Mary materialized in her father’s barber shop!

“Hilarious,” “Intelligent,” “Provocative,” “Scorching” all describe Robert Dubac’s new solo show The Book of Moron! If you liked last season’s The Male Intellect, you’ll love this show. Combining theater with stand-up, Dubac crashes head first into the barriers of sex, race, religion, politics and the media. And he’s not alone. With mesmerizing ease, he portrays multiple characters who all take turns beating the hornet’s nest of hype and spin with the big stick of knowledge. It’s comedy on steroids. Think your funny bone can handle it?

The Miracle Worker
Newtown Theater, 120 N. State St, Newtown

Immortalized onstage and screen by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, this classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. Winner of the 1960 TONY Award for Best Play, The Miracle Worker dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge. Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. With scenes of intense physical and emotional dynamism, Annie’s success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single, glorious word: “water”.
