The People’s Store in Lambertville, NJ is much more than an antiques center. They have four levels of this 1839 landmark in the middle of Lambertville, NJ. A wonderful river town with great galleries, B&Bs, restaurants, and sightseeing, named by Forbes Magazine one of the Prettiest Towns in America, and by Travel & Leisure as one of the ten “quirkiest” towns in America. It’s a wonderful spot for a weekend visit in all seasons, with good food, entertainment, historical sightseeing, and great arts and antiques browsing.
The People’s Store has been a central business fixture in Lambertville since 1839. Around 60 years ago it turned from household goods to antiques. With fifty dealers, they have some of the best antique dealers in the region, with a waiting list to join. They locate dealers that they want to represent their store, curating the space, merchandising it so shoppers can see how it might look in their homes, making the shopping experience more exciting.
The dealers seek out the most unusual antiques, which brings excitement and fun to the center. Besides the high quality of fine antiques, some of the most sought out after items would be that of the unusual. The big sellers the past few years would be anything funky, mid-century, painted, primitive and industrial. Items that you wouldn’t expect to have in a home are now repurposed into home furniture. The Industrial Design pieces sell quickly.
The People’s Store currently has 50 dealers on 4 floors. The 3rd floor has working artist studios, right inside the People’s Store. Two well-known local artists, Eleanor Voorhees and Kelly Sullivan bring much energy and excitement to the store with their wonderful paintings. The working Artist Studios in the store have huge windows, high ceilings. Both artists do custom commission work on any scale and any location, even international. Inside Eleanor’s studio you will also find one of a kind custom furniture, pottery & lighting.
The People’s Store dealers do their buying around the world. They offer Fine Antiques, Tall Clocks, Primitive Antiques, the largest Silver collection, Men’s & Women’s Vintage Clothing, Glassware, Dishware, Architectural, Mid Century Modern, Primitive & High End Industrial, Vintage Books, Jewelry, Lighting, Fine Asian Antiques. They also have designers that offer Repurposed industrial furniture, Historical Period Furniture and more. The People’s Store is the place to go for all your design needs.
New York and Philadelphia theatrical and movie set designers shop there weekly. People come from all over to shop there because it’s a fun quirky place to shop.
Some of their dealers buy in the old Yugoslavia, Czech Republic, Prague, France & Germany. Some specialize in Art Nouveau, Asian, or Deco. Most dealers get into this business based on what they love, and you can certainly feel the love when you shop at the People’s Store.
Many artists, writers, and musicians live and work in town. Lambertville has many beautiful Bed & Breakfasts, along with pubs, restaurants, antiques, and art galleries. It also has a walkable bridge to New Hope PA, where you’ll find another fun and quirky town, loaded with more fabulous restaurants pubs and B&B’s.
Three years ago the owners of the People’s Store opened the Stone House Antiques Center in Mechanicsville PA, which is just about 20 minutes’ drive from Lambertville.
“Stone House” is named after the gracious main building, also known as the Thomas Walton House, which predates 1814, and which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The Stone House has 25 unique antique dealers on two floors. Both locations won “Best Of “for antiques in Bucks County, PA and Hunterdon County, NJ. The People’s Store was also designated “Best of Philly” for antiques stores.
Last year they opened their 3rd location, the New Hope Antique Center which is on route 202 about 10 minutes’ drive from Lambertville and another 10 minute drive to the Stone House.
A few other interesting things to do in town. The Lambertville Station and Inn is the perfect place to start for Breakfast lunch or dinner, beautiful rooms if you’re spending the weekend. They offer a magnificent restaurant, Pub and one of the best Wine Cellars nestled in the lower level. The Lambertville Station is housed in a converted train station with plenty of seating inside or outside. Or you could walk down the old canal path and into an old little barn which is known as the Boat House pub for a quick drink, and right next to the Hamilton Grill.
The Bucks County Playhouse is also a short walk over the bridge into New Hope PA where you can see a great NYC performance. The Playhouse is on site of the old gristmill from the 1700’s. Or grab dinner at Marsha Browns restaurant and pub, which is set inside an historical old stone converted church.
