New Hope Speaker Series Kicks Off with David Leopold

The New Hope Historical Society will kick off its 14th annual “Mondays at the Mansion” speaker series on April 4 at 5:00 PM at the Bucks County Playhouse, with a special presentation by David Leopold, Creative Director for the Al Hirschfeld Foundation at Lincoln Center, and Director of the Ben Solowey Studio in Bedminster, Pennsylvania.

David’s book, “The Hirschfeld Century: Portrait of an Artist and his Age,” was named one of Amazon’s Top Books of 2015 and hailed by the Washington Post as “an instant classic.”
Mr. Leopold will take attendees on a fascinating tour of the Hirschfeld Century, an 82-year era in which Al Hirschfeld both recorded and defined so much of popular culture, especially through his drawings of productions on Broadway and in Hollywood. Hirschfeld is famous for his caricatures of celebrities and Broadway performers, but folks may not know that he also has a local connection.

David’s talk will incorporate Hirschfeld’s own history at the Bucks County Playhouse. He was there on the iconic playhouse’s opening night. His famous drawing depicting that evening almost cost him his job at the New York Times, but he would return a number of times over the years. He drew the Music Circus in Lambertville as well.

Admission to the event is free to members of the New Hope Historical Society. Tickets for non-members are $15. Reserve at or by calling 215-862-5652.
